CHINA. Xishuangbanna. Yunnan. 1982. Girls with towels on head. Mengzhe is a village on a high plateau. Every Sunday the village is transformed into a colorful free market. Young women from all the surrounding villages come to the market with towels wrapped around their heads, a custom unique to Shui Dai female. Some of these young women come by foot and others by bus or buffalo cart. It seems the most fashionable way to come is on the back of a bicyle peddled by a boyfriend. The pasttime most enjoyed by these women in the market is casual chatter.
