Elliott Erwitt
SCOTLAND. 2011. The Necropolis, Cathedral Square, Glasgow. Overlooking Glasgow Cathedral and Glasgow Royal Infirmary, this sprawling cemetery reflects the importance of Glasgow during Victorian times, when the city was a hugely influential shipping centre. This "city of the dead" contains some 50,000 bodies, the first having been interred in 1832. As was typical of the period, only a small number (about 3,500) are marked by a tomb. Modelled on the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris, the grounds became a showcase for leading architects, masons and sculptors, and almost every notable Glaswegian of the last 150 years is buried here. Taphophiles, or gravers, are people who are passionate about, and enjoy visiting, cemeteries, and this one draws many.
