Elliott Erwitt
SCOTLAND. 2011. Old tenement housing, Glasgow. From the late 19th to the early 20th century, people in Glasgow largely lived in tenement housing. Built of red or white sandstone, the buildings were usually some three or four floors high. The units were crude and often crowded dwellings, some 75% of them had only one or two rooms and sometimes lacked such modern conveniences as an indoor toilet. An important part of the city's history, tenement housing has been preserved for public view by the National Trust for Scotland at Tenement House, Buccleuch Street, Glasgow.
