MOLDOVA. Transdniester. 2004. A woman holds her Transdniestrian passport. Although nobody recognises Transdniester as an independent country, the breakaway republic has acquired all the symbols of statehood, including its own passports, currency, president, constitution, army and customs service. Nostalgia for the days of the USSR run high, and the official state symbol is a hammer and sickle over a sunrise.
