SOUTH PACIFIC. November 5th, 1943 on board the US aircraft carrier USS Saratoga. This hole cost a man's life. The gunner in this Navy bomber was killed by a 20mm shell from a Japanese Zero during the US Navy raid on Rabaul. Upon the plane's return to the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, the dead gunner's finger was still clasped on the trigger of his 50 caliber machinegun. The USS Saratoga participated in the subsequent raid on Rabaul on November 11th and saw action in the bloody taking of Tarawa.
