TANZANIA. 1972. Three adult lionesses and five cubs in the Ngorongoro Crater. Originally, there were six cubs in this pride. When they were two months old, the mothers left them to go hunting, and although the cubs were hidden in the underbrush, a hyena discovered them, killed one and attacked a second one before the mothers returned. The hyena bit off the lower part of on of the hind legs of the second cub. One month later, this cub was being cared for by the pride and he hopped along with them, barely able to keep up. The injured cub is the second away from the camera, in the center of the picture. The pink stump of his crippled leg can just barely be seen.
