INDONESIA. Jogjakarta. 1969. An entranced dancer swallows fire during the Horse Trance Dance. This dance is performed by troupes in public squares or other places where large numbers of people gather. The troupe consists of a powdered, made-up master of ceremonies and a group of performers and dancers who are induced into a trance. Once a dancer is entranced, he loses contact with his surroundings and supposedly even loses consciousness, though he still dances to the rhythm of the orchestra. It is a very primitive folk dance. Once in the trance, the dancer is whipped, made to swallow fire, made to eat broken glass, and other such exotic acts.
