Paolo Pellegrin
A local man, Nikolai Starostin, 53, in the old mining town of Kurday earns his living collecting a selling scrap metal, some collected from the mines. Kurday was the first uranium mine in Soviet-era Kazakhstan, and was listed recently by the IAEA as having the fourth largest radioactive waste deposit in Kazakhstan. 2007
