CHINA. Turfan. 1979. Irrigation canal at the lowest basin in the Turfan area, at the southern foot of the Tianshan Mountain range. Although almost no rain falls in this area, almost five canals have been made to conduct water of melting snow from the mountains. The fierce winds are known at the "warehouse of wind" and temperatures in the summer are so high that the are is called the "fire province". The winds in April are said to be violent and frightening.
