Larry Towell
USA. Montana. August 2012. Father Charles prepares the eucharist at Crow Agency where the Catholic church established its mission in 1892. The accompanying song was sung by Murtle Reid Howe, an 80-year-old Crow Indian who was an orphan. During her life, she received several songs that were given to her in the Crow language by the Holy Spirit. Here she sings one of them. Foreground: Two Whistles, a Crow Indian wearing war paint and medicine hawk headdress photographed by Edward Curtis in 1908. St. Dennis Catholic Church, Crow Reservation.
