INDIA. Delhi. 2009. Outside the slum settlement of Nehru camp. In the dry heat of pre-monsoon Delhi, people get into a frenzy when the daily fresh water delivery arrives, rushing to siphon off precious water. 16-year-old Vinay, who gathers water from the truck every day says "If you throw money here, no one would have time to grab it. Water is more important for us. There used to be 2 such trucks every day, but the villagers refused to pay the other driver his unofficial fee. There are days when he does not show up, in which case the residents walk to other neighborhoods to try to find an active tap. Trucks are sent by New Delhi Municipal Corporation NDMC, specifically the water dept JAL." According to villagers, the driver charges 50 rupees under the table per family per month for access to the trucks water.
