USA. San Francisco, CA. August 4, 2010. The Rainbow Flag, a bold symbol of Gay Pride, was conceived and stitched together in 1978 by a young soldier from Kansas, Gilbert Baker. He stayed in S.F. after discharge to pursue his dreams of being an artist. Baker's life changed forever when he met Harvey Milk, the S.F. Supervisor and was then deeply moved
by Milk's very positive campaign messages of hope for young gay people. After winning the election Milk challenged Baker to come up with a positive symbol of pride for the gay community. He did. And it has been adopted by many communities in our county and in many others. A huge Rainbow Flag was quickly rolled out and stretched out by happy, excited volunteers who maneuvered themselves and the flag into the middle of crowds marching down Market Street. It is a very beautiful sight especially when it is caught by a brisk wind that can turn it into color filled rolling waves.
