BRAZIL. Bahia state. Salvador. 1996. Men and woman suffering of psychological disorders consult with Ya Bomin Ale, the woman in the background, who runs a terreiro of Candomble. Spirits take possession of the body and lead it to a complex ritual of dancing to drumbeat. Christian saints mix with African gods in this pagan religion which helped black slaves keep their dignity. On the far right is Ya Bomin Ale's grandaughter who is being initiated in the secret rites of Candomble to take over her grandmother's terreiro at her death.
