Sergio Larrain
BOLIVIA. Village of Independencia, near Oruro. 1958.
This dance originated amongst the miners who have a "devil" cult. The dance is in honor of the Virgin del Socavon (cave) whose image is a sanctuary in Oruro.
The devil, "Senor Lucifer", a clay statue in the depths of a mine. Photograph taken with light of miners lamp. Indians put offerings of coca leaves, cigarettes and alcohol in the statue. The miners whenever they drink or smoke spray alcohol over the statue or stick cigarettes on it. If a piece of the statue falls off, they replace it so nobobody knows the date on which statue was made.
