INDIA. Panipat, Haryana. 1999. A chance encounter put me together with a group of herdsmen from Rajasthan State. It was the dry season, and the herdsmen were on the move looking for good grazing for their cattle. The group comprised about ten families. They were herding several hundred cattle, living from place to place as they moved. Included among the cattle were many calves. Perhaps the herdsmen earned a living as they moved by selling mild from the cows. I noticed some children in the group, and knew there was certainly no way for them to be attending school.
