January 1961. Bala is an Indian girl who lives in Chhawlaa, a village near Delhi. Her father is a farmer. During the day she helps her mother collect water from the well, or she plays with her sister Shashi. Her parents have decided to send her to Delhi to assist to the Independance Day Parade together with her brother, Padam Singh.
