INDIA. Darbhanga, Bihar. 1999. Among the persons who suffered from flooding in this area, perhaps those who were able to live temporarily in tents put up on towns and villages were more fortunate than those who could only escape to the sides of the roads. Many of the people who fled the flooding took livestock with them. They thus faced the double difficulty of obtaining food for themselves and the animals. Maybe that helps to account for why I saw lines of people here and there leading water buffalo and other livestock toward the marketplace to sell them. They no doubt had the selling prices for their livestock beaten down.
