Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson
FRANCE. Paris. Funeral of the victims of Charonne.
The demonstration organized on Feb. 7th, 1962 in Paris in favor of Algeria's independence and in order to protest against the actions of the OAS (Secret Army Organisation-, fighting at all costs to keep the Algeria under French rule), ended in tragedy.
To escape a police attack, the crowd ran towards the Charonne metro station's stairs which were closed. Several people died from suffocation or from being crushed.
