SENEGAL. Dakka. The Sufi brotherhood of the Omarian Tidjanes organise a yearly retreat in Dakka, near Madina Gounass. Thousands of faithfuls spend a whole week in the bush, withdrawing from material life and preparing spiritually themselves for the fasting month of Ramadan. Women are banned from these retreats, a practice unique in Senegal, where the sexual segregation imposed by Bedouin Arab imperialism is not observed. 1988.
