GB. Isle of Man. Castle Town. The European Court of Human Rights condemned the practice of corporal punishment using birch branches. The islanders protested, 31,000 out of 45,000 signed a petition to maintain their customary punishment. Superintendent Alan KILIP holds the birch, inside the court retiring room in Castle Rushen, where the sentence is carried out. He stands next to the table over which the victim has to lie.
