CHINA. Shandong. 1993. Fifty years ago, young girls were to abide to celibacy following the Virgin Mother Mary, and had worked as volunteers in churches devoting their entire lives to God. These women have since aged, have no relatives, no security, and now face a lonely and miserable life. Hu-Yu Lan, 89 years old, is one of them. She became bedridden 6 years ago. Luckily, she has two nieces who are of the same faith and take care of her. Together they read the Bible to her twice a day.
