INDONESIA. Bali. 1996. Balinese bury their dead soon after they die. Every ten years or so, however, each village exhumes bodies and cremates them in a joint ceremony. The participants, all wearing mourning clothes, form circles around the remains of their family members, and then eat the food they brought with them and drink to the spirit of the deceased. After cremation, the families carry the ashes to a nearby river of to the sea; while offering Hindu prayers, they scatter the ashes on the water.
