Sharvati Devi has only three children and plans not to have more for economic reasons - though many of her friends believe that a large family is a sign of God's kindness. About 90% of India's population are villagers and may never have been to school, but Sharvati, who lives in a joint family (including her hsband's mother, two brothers) and cooks for everyone, is learning to read and write.
