HUNGARY. Budapest. 1948. In the hills of Buda, a new electric railway was constructed last year. Only the engine-driver is an adult. Every other function is taken over by children between the ages of 12 and 14. The children are drawn from schools and already 1,000 have been specially trained for the different operations and jobs. They work a 6-hour day and stay on the job for 1 or 2 months at a time, are then replaced by new trainees. The authorities believe that this practical work has great educational value and the time spent working is profitable for their development.
