GREECE. Athens. The Temple of Hephaestus, a 5th century BC Doric temple built by Ictinos, architect of the Parthenon, was known for centuries as the Theseion because of its frieze depicting the exploits of Theseus. It is now known to have been dedicated to Hephaestus, god of blacksmiths and potters whose forges and workshops have occupied this quarter since antiquity. 1978.
