SENEGAL. Zinguichor. A Muslim fondles his prayer beads while seated in a car. Around his arm, he carries a string of protection amulets, made out of hand written sourates from the Koran sewn into leather pouches. Black Islam carried into its practices ancient animist rites, such as these amulets known as "gris-gris" where Allah's protection was sought instead of the ancestors' spirits. It is not uncommon to see western educated Africans carry such gris-gris. 1988.
