SOUTH AFRICA. Brandfort. Members of a Zionist church attend a service inside a farmhouse. The service is a mix of protestant christian and African rituals with songs and dances. 1999.
Christianity reflects the division of society in South Africa, with Zion churches drawing from African rituals while churches for whites look very calvinist or anglican.
In the South Africa born out of the democratic elections of 1994, religion helped transcend apartheid. The reconciliation between races we are witnessing in South Africa - however partial, is unsatisfying and even frustrating for many - would it have been possible outside a Christian culture?
