SERBIA. Belgrade. 1995. 122mm discarded artillery shells are used by sculptor Nikola SIMIJANOVIC to make the Serbian Orthodox cross which is for sale in a Belgrade gallery. Although until recently an active Officer in the now defeated Serbian Army of KRAJINA, Mr SIMIJANOVIC says he sends out "a message of love and respect from war material". He claims soldiers from World War I made crosses and church bells from bayonets. The huge chandelier in San Marko Church in Belgrade is also supposed to have been made from swords used in the battle of Kosovo in the 14th century, a Serbian defeat which led to five centuries of domination by Turks.
