While the government had allowed certain liberties in Chinese daily life, came the student riots and once again the Peking authorities drew the line. They clamped down on consumer commodities, closed western style discotheques, arrested smugglers, and even put controls on the movement of foreigners and chinese visitors from overseas outside the normal tourist areas.
The exterior of a temple in Chao An, which had partly been destroyed by demonstrators fire during the Cultural Revolution and which the State is now restoring as a symbol of the countries religious heritage, to draw more visitors from overseas.
