Robert Capa / International Center of Photography
Matrisse s pends most of his time in his bed.Two years earlier he was given up, but he survived a very severe operation. He has a severe case of arthritis and can move only with great pain. His mahogany bedtable is covered with art books in which his latest drawings were published, and his arthritis plagued beautiful hands are still in steady movement and there is always a pencil in his right hand.Next to him is his radio, it is here that he receives his few intimate friends. His body is nearly immobile but his finely chiselled head is in constant movement, and so is his mind.On days when he feels well he tells stories with great gusto, and here he is telling a story about a "crooked" art dealer who should have been shot 40 years ago, and who is still alive.
