During the visit of French President Charles de Gaulle to Algeria to find a solution to end the civil war during which time France had sent thousands of conscripts to protect the Colonial investments, pro independence demonstrations took place in the city. In the Casbah of Algiers, French 'Mobile Guard" units and soldiers patrol the streets against any further conflict.
