TURKEY. Istanbul. 2002. Alevis celebrate a "Cem" ritual by circling the floor, to sufi music, around a whirling girl. On the wall, the figure of Ali, the founder of the Shi'ite sect is flanked by sufi saints. The Alevi sect, which makes 20% of the population of Turkey, mix Zoroastrian, Hindu and Shi'ite rituals with their brand of Islam.
