Magnum Professional Practice: Bradford

Originated as a response to the changing nature of the photography market, Magnum's Professional Practice events deliver impartial guidance from a wide range of visual imaging industries. With access to key individuals working in editorial, commercial, cultural and publishing industries, Magnum is well placed to advise the next generation of photographers.

In a series of weekend lectures, leading figures of the photographic industry will deliver presentations and advice on the best means for engaging with and working in these sectors. Eight speakers from a variety of industries, including the advertising & corporate, editorial, gallery, NGO, museum, publishing and rights sectors will each give presentations on their subject of expertise, with plenty of time for questions and networking opportunities.

This event is aimed a wide range of photographers at different stages of their career: professional photographers working in a particular discourse but wanting to explore other avenues; emerging photographers who require practical, vocational training; or semi-professional photographers wishing to make the commitment to full-time practice. Each of Magnum’s Professional Practice lectures is tailored to deliver the best impartial advice and provide the opportunity to meet with key industry specialists. Places on Magnum’s Professional Practice course are limited and successful candidates will be chosen on the perceived benefit to the applicant's career.

The next seminar will take place at the National Media Museum, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD1 1NQ on 28-29 July.

Magnum’s Professional Practice events are produced in collaboration with their educational partners, IdeasTap. Through the generous support of IdeasTap, 10 photographers under the age of 25 are given the opportunity to participate in this event for the heavily subsidised rate of £50 plus VAT. <a href='' target='_blank'>If you are eligable for a bursary, apply here.</a>

Mark Power – Magnum Photographer

As a child Mark Power discovered his father's home-made enlarger in the family attic, a contraption consisting of an upturned flowerpot, a domestic light bulb and a simple camera lens. His interest in photography probably began at this pivotal moment, although he later chose to study painting instead. He worked in the editorial and charity markets for nearly ten years, before he began teaching in 1992. This move coincided with a shift towards long-term, self-initiated projects, which now sit comfortably alongside a number of large-scale commissions in the industrial sector. Power's work has been seen in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the world and he has published five books: The Shipping Forecast (1996), Superstructure (2000), The Treasury Project (2002), 26 Different Endings (2007) and The Sound of Two Songs (2010). His prints are in many important public and private collections. He is Professor of Photography at the University of Brighton. Mark Power joined Magnum Photos in 2002.

Jonathan Bell – Editorial & Publishing Representative – Magnum Photos

Jonathan Bell studied media production at the University of Lincoln, specialising in photography. After graduation he worked at Eyevine photo agency as a picture researcher and sales person for stock and assignments gaining vital industry experience. Jonathan currently works at Magnum Photos as Editorial & Publishing Representative; handling requests from a wide spectrum of clients from book publishers to newspapers, responsibilities include account management, negotiating fees, picture research and assignment production. Jonathan has a huge passion for images, new media and the photography industry.

Greg Hobson - Curator of Photographs - National Media Museum

Hobson’s work includes the development of the Museum’s Collection and, the curation of a variety of exhibition projects that have combined various media. He sits on international jury panels for photography and exhibition awards and manages the National Media Museum’s First Book Award. He is currently curating an exhibition of the work of British photographer Tom Wood and, is actively contributing to the programme for the Museum’s planned new exhibition space in London.

Emily Graham – Picture Editor – WaterAid

Emily Graham is the Picture Editor at international NGO WaterAid, where she commissions shoots across Africa and Asia and creates and curates creative projects and collaborations. She is also the co-founder and director of the photography project, Contact Editions, an online gallery selling affordable edition prints of emerging artists' work. Contact is dedicated to showing new photography from both emerging and more established artists, both in the gallery and on its popular blog.

Dewi Lewis - Dewi Lewis Publishing

Founded in 1994 Dewi Lewis Publishing is one of the foremost international photographic publishers. Its authors have included leading British and international photographers such as William Klein, Martin Parr, Simon Norfolk, Anders Petersen, Fay Godwin, Tom Wood, Sergio Larrain, Frank Horvat, Paolo Pellegrin and Bruce Gilden. The aim of the company is to bring to the attention of a wider public, accessible but challenging contemporary photography by both established and lesser known practitioners. It works in close collaboration with a number of European publishers and is a founding member of The European Publishers Award for Photography which is now in its 18th year.
Dewi Lewis was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in 2004 and, in November 2009, he was awarded the inaugural Royal Photographic Society Award for Outstanding Service to Photography.

Rebecca McClelland - Photography Editor – NewStatesman

Rebecca McClelland is NewStatesman magazine's first Photography Editor tasked with overseeing the visual content of the newly redesigned magazine. She is also Deputy Director of The Ian Parry Scholarship, an international award for photojournalists and Visiting Lecturer at UCA Farnham. She has worked on editorials in London for the last 11 years, starting her career at the Sunday Times magazine and continuing to edit picture desks at the Evening Standard, Wallpaper* and Art World magazine.

John Wyatt-Clarke – Photography Agent – Wyatt Clarke Jones

John Wyatt-Clarke is one of the UK’s leading commercial photographic agents. His background in academic History of Art, publishing and at Magnum Photos led him to set up a niche agency that would introduce the work of non-advertising photographers (particularly documentary and fine-art photographers) to advertising clients. The strategy has put Wyatt-Clarke & Jones at the heart of the mainstream advertising establishment. John also lectures and teaches, specialising in commissioned art from the early Renaissance to now, and has been a Visiting Lecturer at Royal College of Art since 2002. His presentation will consider the commissioning process, and how work in the advertising sector can be used to support and develop your own practice.

Fiona Rogers - Cultural & Education Manager, Magnum Photos

Fiona Rogers studied Arts & Media at Surrey Institution of Art & Design, beginning her career in photography in 2004 at a photography gallery in central London. She moved to Magnum Photos in 2005 and in 2006 developed Magnum's Educational activities, including the creation of university partnerships and managing an international program of workshops, portfolio reviews and masterclass events. In addition, Fiona also manages the coordination and originating of Magnum's touring exhibitions and works alongside Magnum's Cultural Director representing photographers in commercial print sales. In 2011 Fiona developed Firecracker, an online platform supporting European women in photography. Fiona's Professional Practice presentation will focus on introducing the Commercial Print Sales Market including clients, galleries, editioning and mediums.
