In the last days of El Salvador's twelve year civil war fighting intensified as guerilla and government forces clashed to control territory which could serve as bargaining chips in the final peace negotiations. Peasants continued to build an infrastructure in the countryside in anticipation of peace. Poverty remained the cause and a visible symptom of the long war.
